Sint, Quilt, Games
A busy weekend at the Moss family! Yesterday, Sinterklaas arrived in the Netherlands, and he of course also visited Leeuwarden. Hannah and Sam had been practicing their songs and were super ready for a day full of antics. Here are a few piccies, no Big Man, but he’s on video and will be published on this site soon… and for more news, check here! ‘Our’ Sinterklaas in Leeuwarden has his own site as well: Sinterklaas in Leeuwarden
But here are our little critters getting ready for Sinterklaas, very excited because he brings PRESENTS!!!! Or ‘doooootjuuuuuuuuuuuuuuhs’ as Sam calls them ![]()
- Sam trying on his Piet-outfit first thing in the morning
- Hannah and Sam in the bike car/double buggy. This is how we ferry them around when we’re not using the car
- Sitting on daddy’s shoulders to see even more
- Hannah can’t wait!
- Piet carrying a bad boy…
Then, after getting a few sandwiches from the supermarket (we loooove Saturdays, because the AH then has all its sandwiches for 35% off… katsjing!!! Lunch banquet for almost nothing…), we ran to the Oldehove – the leaning tower of Leeuwarden – to watch the unveiling of the largest quilt in the world. Some of Amy’s knitting friends had also worked on it, so this was something we couldn’t miss…
To top it all off, today we went to Zwolle to a large Games Exhibition. Not as big as Spiel in Germany, but a lot closer and big enough for us! We got home with 5 new games: Babel, Roll-it, Ballonnenrace, Catan for 2 players and Tayu.
At the fair, we ran into Fifi, and both Hannah and Sam were mesmerized. ‘Is this the real Fifi, mommy?’ ‘Why doesn’t she talk?’ Sam didn’t ask any questions and just gave Fifi a big hug!
And we saw a full rainbow on the way home. Spectacular! We even drove past the spot where it hit the ground, but no, unfortunately, no pot of gold (or it was too small to see…). No dancing leprechauns either.
*unfortunately, I can’t both add a gallery and separate photos… so these last ones were deleted… Our end of year round-up will however have some of these in it…*
House work
A lot of ideas are currently bubbling up in our heads to do some DIY. The weather is getting worse and worse, so we stay in a lot more and ’see’ a lot more ![]()
The stairs will definitely get a new coat, the walls in the stairwell need painting, and the pantry/washroom, well, is the pantry…
We are planning to finally put a proper wall in (you can see where) and then tile the entire area around the washing machine. The ultimate dream would be to have all of the floor tiled as well, but that is a job that requires all our stuff cleaned up and out first and a few days of decent dry weather to both dry the mortar and not drench our stuff. So, that is probably something for Spring.

Our washing area, with new floral covering on the folding area. Just image a lovely matching (purple?) curtain next to the washing machine to hide the laundry...
In the meantime, Sam makes us coffee… The sweatheart…
Sint Maarten
Where the kids in Ireland go round at Halloween, here they go out with their lanterns trying to score candy on Sint Maarten, on the 11th of the 11th. Hannah and Sam, together with Hester and Marit, went round the neighbourhood singing songs for sweets. And very succesfully too! They had a bag full and will be enjoying it for weeks to come… After a long evening out, Sam took some time going to bed (very eventful, new stimuli, always guaranteed to cause a bit of crying – well, lots – before bedtime) and Hannah also didn’t want the evening to end…
Some photos!
- Hannah and Sam ready to go out
- On the way to their first ‘victim’
- Sam and Marit – matching lanterns!
- Singing for sweets: Sam, Hester and Hannah
- And collecting the bootie…
- Let’s do that again next year, mom. Leuk!!! (Fun!)
Newsflash!!!
Hannah has a wibbly-wobbly tooth!!!
Hopefully in a few days time we can show you a nice picture of a gapy mouth…
O yeah, and the reason you haven’t seen any pictures from Halloween, is because they all came out like this:
- Steve, Dexter & Deedee
- Dexter Potter – and the reason why it’s a good idea to check if you have all the ingredients for the outfit and check whether the person wearing it likes wearing glasses and will not scream his head off when you spray-dye his hair orange…
- Deedee looking her best – not…
- Earlier on, Sam as a witch/warlock – should have kept him in this outfit…
